If you enjoy working with wood, building things with metal, or just tinkering on your car, you may be thinking about setting up a home workshop. Depending on the size of your property, you can set up a home workshop in your basement or garage. Or you may use a structure on your property that can be set aside for this purpose, like an old barn or shed.
You will need several areas where you will be able to work on your projects and also store your tools. One idea you could consider is using old kitchen cabinets in your workshop. In order to create a work space, put plywood on top of the counter tops. This gives you a lot of counter space and lots of drawers and cupboards to store all of your tools. Look online or ask around your neighborhood and see if anyone wants to junk old kitchen cabinets that you could use for this purpose.
Find an area where you will be able to store your scrap lumber. If you have a limited amount of space, you could set up some shelves near the ceiling where you can store the lumber. You want to make sure that the lumber will be protected from water and moisture. If you keep it organized, it will make finding the right pieces of lumber for your next project a lot easier.
If you have a chop saw, you want to set it up in a position that is lower than the counters. This will give you the ability to rest the lumber that you want to cut on a flat surface. Set up a pegboard in the workshop where you can organize and then quickly grab the tools that you need.
If your workshop is quite large, consider investing in machinery that will make the work you do easier. For example, you could purchase vertical material lifts in order to easily move the projects you are working on as well as supplies back and forth from the first and second floor.
